What is a cast-iron pan supposed to look like after numerous uses?
I have used my cast-iron pan numerous times now. I cook food, and when finished cooking I will re-heat the pan for a couple minutes. Then I pour olive oil and sea salt on the pan and scrub the salt around the pan with a paper towel harshly. Then I'll wipe the pan again with a paper towel.
I have some slight discoloration on the pan, but don't know if it's 'seasoning' or the beginnings of rust formation. I guess the basic question is after numerous uses, is the pan supposed to continually appear completely black as it did upon first arrival?

Mine look black and we have had them for a few years. We use Crisco to season the pan after it has been cleaned.
When we clean the pan we use hot water and a paper towel. Then put it pack on the stove and warm it a bit and rub a small amount of Crisco onto the cooking surface with another paper towel.
We don't use salt to clean it or olive oil to season it. I would think both of those are a bad choice.
