Are you allowed to bring these items past an airport security checkpoint?
Fish, cognac, non-prescription vitamin pills/gel pills
I'm not sure if this is allowed more than 3 oz. of each in a quart size clear, ziptop bag. And even if they are allowed, do they go in checked baggage or carry-on? (these items are for my relatives)
I've checked TSA' permitted and prohibited items list online, but the foods and drinks list doesn't mention fish or anything you an actually cook other than a sandwich or something. If the cognac is not allowed to bring, can it be purchased in the stores within the airport?
Cognac = No, unless you have it in the little bottles (3 oz or less), and it will count toward your limited amount of liquids (and must be placed in quart sized ziptop plastic bag). However, if it is an international flight you can purchase cognac at the duty free shop at the airport, (after you clear security) or maybe when you are on the plane.
Vitamins = Yes, and they do not count toward your liquids if they are gel pills (they would only be considered a liquid if they are in a bottle and in liquid form).
Fish = Depends. Are you talking about fresh fish, frozen fish, cooked fish, or canned? If it is an international flight you are not supposed to bring prepared food with you, but canned food would probably be fine (although may count toward your liquids). If it is fresh or frozen, you will need to find a way to keep it cold without ice (liquid). Some people are using frozen vegetable packs. In general, I think it is not a good idea not to take prepared food with you to the airport.
Remember, you can take the cognac in your checked luggage, just not in the cabin of the plane with you (unless it is a very small bottle). So if you don't need it in the cabin of the plane with you, you can pack it (I would wrap it up in a plastic bag and make sure it has a lot of padding) and put it in with the luggage you are checking.
